Junior League of Rockford President, 2007-2008
Jenny Cushing
So it is Sunday evening, Easter festivities have concluded, the girls are in bed, and my wife’s night has just begun. There are phone calls to return, schedules to arrange, and a Jargon article to write. As you have probably already deduced, she delegated this last responsibility to yours truly. When I asked her what I was to write about, she provided me with the guidance and confidence I needed by replying, “I am sure you will figure it out.” As I sit in front of the computer a bit weary-eyed and ready for bed, I am beginning to understand a fraction of what it is like to be a Junior League member. While I would rather be watching Sportscenter or checking my NCAA basketball bracket, I am tending to Junior League business. I believe that is the first and last time I will be able to make such a statement. Making sacrifices to help improve our community is something I want our daughters to be involved in as they grow older, and my wife (and all of you) are certainly practicing what we preach. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Junior League of Rockford for the positive impact it has had on the community as well as on the Cushing family.
When I write about the positive impact JLR has had on my family, I want to be more specific. While I am from Rockford and still have many friends I grew up with in the area, Jenny is from the Chicago suburbs and subsequently only knew who I knew when we arrived here as a couple in 1999. Junior League had always been a part of Jenny’s life while we resided in Chicago, Fort Worth (Texas) and Ann Arbor (Michigan), but we were never in any of those places long enough to form lasting relationships. Once in Rockford, Junior League became a place where Jenny found other women with a shared vision of giving back to the community, and many of her friends today are a result of her membership. And for that I am thankful.
Now back to my NCAA bracket. Any of you Junior Leaguers check out that Drake-Western Kentucky game? Probably not, but it was one heck of a game. Since we are talking basketball now, I can segue into how Junior League is now in the fourth quarter of this year. RAISE is certainly a project that is well worth the work involved given it can change the lives of future generations, and the Designer Showcase Home is an exciting way to promote and raise money for Junior League. I am looking forward to the Premier Party at which time we can toast Junior League for all the hard work and dedication that has occurred over the past year.
Sincerely,
Kyle Cushing (Jenny’s husband) |
